Since April 2024, volunteers from the ASCEND Day Program have been lending their time, energy, and compassion to the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter, giving back to the community in a way that benefits both people and pets. Together, they have dedicated over 300 hours of service, and their impact can be felt in every corner of the shelter.
Building Skills, Building Community
At ASCEND, our mission is to help our adults develop meaningful job skills, independence, and confidence. Volunteering at the animal shelter has provided the perfect environment for our participants to grow while making a real difference.
Several times a week, our volunteers arrive with enthusiasm and a smile, ready to help wherever they are needed. Their responsibilities include creating microchip packs, bagging dog food, folding laundry, and assisting with dishes—all tasks that keep the shelter running smoothly. These activities help our participants practice responsibility, teamwork, and hands-on learning in a supportive setting.
Why We Volunteer
When asked why they enjoy volunteering, our participants gave heartfelt answers that show just how much this work means to them:
Maria: “I like helping people at the shelter.”
Crystal: “I like coming because I want to see how hard people work here at the shelter.”
JuJu: “I like to help the dogs by making microchip packs.”
Christian: “I enjoy seeing the dogs and helping with different tasks, such as microchips and dog food bags.”
Trainer Norma: “I love to see clients’ success in learning new skills and love to see them build their self-esteem.”
These perspectives highlight how volunteering not only supports the shelter but also encourages our participants to value their contributions, take pride in their work, and connect with others.
Favorite Moments at the Shelter
It’s not all work—volunteering at the animal shelter brings plenty of joy too. Here are some favorite experiences our team shared:
Maria: “I like people that bring animals that get lost in the street.”
Crystal: “I enjoy seeing animals at the shelter and knowing they will go to a new home.”
JuJu: “That dogs get new homes.”
Christian: “Seeing puppies and cats, and I love dogs.”
Trainer Norma: “Knowing that there can be a safe place for a lost animal.”
Each smile, wagging tail, and happy adoption story reinforces the importance of their contributions and motivates our volunteers to keep coming back.
A Lasting Impact
Since joining in April 2024, the ASCEND Day Program’s volunteers have logged over 300 hours of service—a milestone that speaks to their dedication and commitment. But more than numbers, this partnership has built confidence, strengthened community ties, and created meaningful opportunities for adults with disabilities to thrive.
At ASCEND, we believe that every individual has unique talents to share, and volunteering at Animal Services has allowed our participants to shine. Their work supports not only the shelter’s staff and animals but also demonstrates the power of inclusion, kindness, and teamwork.
Looking Ahead
As our volunteers continue to serve, we know their impact will only grow. The partnership between ASCEND and Animal Services is more than just volunteering—it’s a testament to what happens when people come together with compassion and purpose.
We are proud of the hard work, dedication, and joy our volunteers bring each week, and we look forward to many more hours of service, learning, and smiles in the months to come.
