At the ASCEND Day Program, learning comes from experience. As a community-based program focused on helping our clients build meaningful life skills, physical wellness, and greater confidence, we are always looking for exciting new ways to create hands-on community experiences. That is why we are proud to share our latest athletic adventure: hitting the driving range to learn the sport of golf.
Recently, a group of ASCEND clients stepped up to the tee to learn the fundamentals of the game. Combining classroom-style learning with real-world practice, our clients proved that with the right technique and a lot of enthusiasm, any goal is within reach.
More Than Just a Game
Learning to play golf is about much more than just hitting a ball. Every lesson helps clients develop physical coordination, patience, and social skills that can be used out in the community and in future social or workplace settings.
During the activity, clients practiced:
Following multi-step instructions: Translating verbal and visual cues into physical movements.
Gross motor skills and coordination: Aligning the body and timing the swing.
Focus and patience: Taking time between shots to reset and try again.
Community etiquette: Understanding the rules and respect required in public recreational spaces.
Teamwork and peer encouragement: Cheering each other on from the safety zones.
These structured community outings help build the confidence needed to navigate public spaces independently and interact socially with new peers.
From Theory to the Driving Range
The lesson began back at our office, where clients watched instructional videos breaking down how to properly hold a golf club. After analyzing the visual steps, everyone practiced their grip in a comfortable, familiar environment.
Once the fundamentals were down, it was time to put them into action! The group headed out to the driving range, where each client took to their hitting bay. Clients practiced setting up their stance, aligning their club, and swinging to launch the ball down the range.
Alongside the physical swing, clients learned the vital "etiquette of the green"—including staying safely behind the designated lines while others are swinging, keeping a safe distance, and taking turns.
Looking Ahead to the Next Tee Time
This successful trip to the driving range is just the beginning. As ASCEND continues to expand our community-based recreational and vocational offerings, our clients will have more opportunities to try new sports, visit new community hubs, and uncover hidden talents.
We are incredibly proud of every single client who stepped up to the tee, practiced their grip, and represented ASCEND so beautifully out on the range. We look forward to many more active, skill-building adventures ahead!
