A San Bernardino Story of Growth and Determination
For many people, discovering a passion takes years of searching. For Jacob Olsen, a native of San Bernardino, California, that passion came through creativity, perseverance, and learning how to embrace life with autism.
Jacob, an animation artist and exceptional graduate of Mind Studio, has faced challenges that many people may never fully understand. Diagnosed with autism at around five or six years old, Jacob experienced difficulties with communication and learning during childhood. But instead of allowing those obstacles to define the future, Jacob used creativity, determination, and self-expression to build a life filled with purpose.
Today, Jacob’s story serves as a powerful reminder that individuals with disabilities are capable of incredible growth, artistic talent, and meaningful contributions to the community when they are given encouragement, opportunity, and support.
At ASCEND Day Program, stories like Jacob’s inspire the work we do every day.
Learning to Navigate the Challenges of Autism
Autism affects every person differently. For Jacob, early life came with challenges in communication and learning. Like many individuals on the autism spectrum, finding ways to connect with others and express thoughts clearly was not always easy.
However, Jacob’s journey reflects something important that families, educators, and support professionals often witness firsthand: growth happens over time.
“I was able to make it through these problems over time,” Jacob shared when reflecting on childhood challenges.
That growth did not happen overnight. It came through persistence, self-discovery, and support from people who believed in Jacob’s abilities rather than focusing only on limitations.
For adults with disabilities, confidence can grow tremendously when they are encouraged to pursue their interests, develop practical skills, and build relationships within the community. Community-based programs like ASCEND are designed to help create those opportunities.
Discovering a Calling Through Animation
For Jacob, creativity became more than a hobby. It became a calling.
After discovering animation, Jacob realized that storytelling and visual art gave a voice to imagination and emotion in a way words sometimes could not. Animation opened the door to self-expression, creativity, and purpose.
“I wanted to be an animator and express my fantasy and share it to the world,” Jacob explained.
That dream reflects something powerful about creative careers and artistic pursuits for individuals with disabilities. Art allows people to communicate ideas, feelings, humor, imagination, and personality in unique ways. Whether through drawing, music, painting, digital design, or filmmaking, creativity can become both a personal outlet and a pathway toward employment skills.
At ASCEND Day Program, participants are encouraged to explore their interests and strengths in real-world settings throughout the community. Programs that support creative exploration help individuals discover not only what they enjoy, but also what motivates them to keep learning and growing.
Expanding Horizons Through Music
Jacob’s creative journey did not stop with animation. In addition to developing artistic skills, Jacob began learning piano and guitar to continue expanding personal abilities and interests.
“That way I can extend my horizons,” Jacob shared.
Learning music can be incredibly beneficial for adults with disabilities. Beyond creativity, music often supports confidence-building, patience, emotional expression, memory, and focus. It can also encourage social interaction and teamwork when people learn and perform together.
Most importantly, trying something new teaches an important lesson: growth never has to stop.
Many adults with disabilities discover new passions later in life once they are placed in environments that encourage exploration instead of limitation. Whether someone is interested in art, fitness, volunteering, technology, cooking, or music, opportunities for learning can open doors to greater independence and self-confidence.
The Importance of Community and Belonging
One of the most meaningful parts of Jacob’s story is the sense of connection built through shared experiences.
Jacob explained that being around others who faced similar struggles helped create friendships and understanding. Feeling accepted by peers who understand personal challenges can make a tremendous difference in someone’s confidence and emotional well-being.
For many adults with disabilities, isolation can become a major obstacle. Community-based day programs help combat that isolation by creating opportunities for social interaction, teamwork, community engagement, and relationship-building.
At ASCEND Day Program, participants spend time developing vocational skills while also building friendships, communication abilities, and confidence in community settings throughout San Bernardino and surrounding areas.
A supportive environment can help individuals feel empowered to be themselves while continuing to grow personally and professionally.
Motivation Comes from Being Yourself
Jacob’s message about motivation carries an important lesson for everyone.
“You may like to do your jobs, but hey, sometimes you got to be your own person,” Jacob said. “When you're more free-minded, that's when you're better motivated.”
This perspective highlights something many disability advocates emphasize: individuals thrive when they are treated as people first, not simply defined by diagnoses or limitations.
Every person has unique interests, personalities, talents, and goals. Programs that focus only on routines without encouraging individuality may miss opportunities to truly help someone flourish.
At ASCEND, participants are encouraged to build independence while exploring personal interests and meaningful goals. Motivation often becomes stronger when people feel ownership over their future and are empowered to pursue activities that matter to them.
Embracing Change and Taking Initiative
Jacob also shared an important truth about personal growth:
“If you want to do something, you got to make it happen. You don't wait for it to happen.”
That mindset reflects resilience, self-advocacy, and determination — qualities that are essential for success in employment, relationships, and independent living.
Change can be difficult for anyone, especially for individuals who thrive on routine and predictability. Yet growth often requires stepping outside of comfort zones, trying new experiences, and adapting to challenges.
Jacob’s willingness to embrace creativity, music, and new opportunities demonstrates how powerful self-belief can become when combined with support and encouragement.
How ASCEND Day Program Supports Adults with Disabilities
At ASCEND Day Program, the goal is to help adults with disabilities discover strengths, build job skills, and become active members of the community.
As a community-based day program, ASCEND focuses on real-world experiences that help participants gain confidence, independence, and vocational development. Participants are encouraged to explore interests, practice social skills, and participate in meaningful community activities that support long-term growth.
Stories like Jacob Olsen’s remind us why this work matters.
Every individual has potential. Sometimes all it takes is the right support system, the opportunity to explore personal interests, and people who believe in what is possible.
A Story That Inspires Others
Jacob’s journey from facing communication challenges as a child to becoming an animation artist and musician is more than just a success story. It is a reminder that growth looks different for everyone — and that disability does not limit creativity, ambition, or purpose.
For adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, pursuing passions can lead to confidence, connection, and meaningful futures.
And as Jacob’s story shows, sometimes the most important step is simply believing that your voice, your creativity, and your dreams deserve to be shared with the world.
