There are some outings that go beyond just getting out of the building—and Taco Tuesday at Tio's Tacos is exactly that kind of experience for the participants of the ASCEND Day Program.
Located in the heart of Riverside, Tio’s Tacos is more than just a place to eat—it’s a vibrant, artistic environment filled with colorful sculptures, recycled art installations, and an energy that invites curiosity. For the adults we support at ASCEND, this weekly outing becomes a hands-on opportunity to build independence, practice social skills, and explore community spaces in a meaningful way.
More Than Just Tacos
At ASCEND, every outing is intentional. Taco Tuesday isn’t just about enjoying delicious food (although that’s definitely a highlight). It’s about real-world skill-building in an engaging, supportive environment. Participants practice:
Money management by budgeting and paying for their meals
Communication skills by ordering food and interacting with staff
Decision-making by choosing from a diverse menu
Time management by following a schedule and staying on task
These are the kinds of everyday skills that translate directly into greater independence and confidence.
A Space That Sparks Creativity
One of the most unique aspects of Tio’s Tacos is its artistic atmosphere. The outdoor seating area is filled with imaginative sculptures made from repurposed materials—bicycles turned into art pieces, mosaics crafted from broken tiles, and unexpected creations around every corner.
For many ASCEND participants, this environment becomes a conversation starter and a source of inspiration. It encourages:
Creative thinking
Observation and discussion
Appreciation for art in everyday spaces
It’s not uncommon for participants to leave with new ideas for their own creative projects back at the program.
Building Social Confidence
Eating out in a public setting provides a natural opportunity to practice social interaction. Participants engage with peers, staff, and community members, working on:
Appropriate public behavior
Turn-taking in conversations
Expressing preferences clearly and respectfully
These experiences help reduce anxiety in social settings and build confidence over time—an essential step toward employment readiness and community integration.
A Community Connection
At ASCEND, we believe that inclusion means being an active part of the community. Regular outings like Taco Tuesday help participants feel connected to the world around them. Visiting local businesses like Tio’s Tacos fosters familiarity, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
For some, it even opens the door to imagining future job opportunities in similar environments—restaurants, customer service roles, or creative spaces.
Why It Matters
What might seem like a simple lunch outing is actually a carefully designed learning experience. Taco Tuesday at Tio’s Tacos blends fun, food, and functional skill-building in a way that feels natural and empowering.
At ASCEND, we’re always looking for ways to make learning come alive—and sometimes, that starts with a taco.
