The ASCEND Day Program hosted an unforgettable Harvest Party this October, marking one of the most vibrant celebrations of the year! Both our Sacramento and San Bernardino programs came alive with color, costumes, and creativity as clients and trainers gathered to celebrate the season together.
At our Digital Cafe and Lounge in Sacramento, laughter filled the air as clients showcased their costumes—everything from witches and vampires to Marvel superheroes and classic horror movie icons. Meanwhile, at the Birdcage Cafe in San Bernardino, the energy was electric. Our staff and participants transformed the space into a festive autumn scene, where dancing, karaoke, and a costume contest brought everyone together in joyful competition and celebration.
From superheroes and villains to mummies and music stars, every costume reflected the imagination and individuality of ASCEND’s participants. Trainers joined in the fun too, showing that at ASCEND, inclusion means everyone participates—no matter your role.
More Than a Party—A Celebration of Traditions Around the World
While the Harvest Party is full of fun and laughter, it’s also a moment to appreciate the deeper meaning behind seasonal celebrations across cultures.
In the United States, Halloween has long been a favorite time for dressing up, carving pumpkins, and enjoying a little spooky fun. But beyond the candy and costumes, Halloween’s roots trace back to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. People once believed that during this time, the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin—an idea that inspired many of the traditions we celebrate today.
Meanwhile, in Latin American cultures, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) offers a more reflective form of celebration. Families build colorful altars, decorate with marigolds, and honor the lives of loved ones who have passed away. It’s a joyful remembrance rather than a somber occasion—celebrating the cycle of life and the connections that continue beyond it.
Around the world, other cultures hold similar traditions that blend gratitude, remembrance, and celebration. In Japan, for example, Obon is a summer festival where families honor their ancestors with lanterns, dances, and gatherings. Much like Day of the Dead, it’s a time to remember loved ones and celebrate their ongoing presence in spirit.
A Season of Gratitude and Growth
At ASCEND, the Harvest Party isn’t just about costumes or karaoke—it’s about connection. These shared celebrations remind us that creativity, cultural appreciation, and community are at the heart of everything we do.
As our clients continue to grow their job skills, confidence, and independence, events like the Harvest Party give everyone a chance to shine in new ways—on the dance floor, in costume, or simply by sharing laughter with friends.
We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s Harvest Party such a success—from the trainers who set up decorations to the clients who showed up with smiles and spirit. Here’s to another year of learning, growing, and celebrating together at ASCEND!
