At the ASCEND Day Program, learning goes far beyond the classroom. As a community-based program focused on helping adults with disabilities build meaningful job skills and greater independence, we are always looking for exciting new ways to create hands-on learning experiences. That is why we are proud to announce that cooking classes have officially begun in our brand new annex as the ASCEND Culinary Academy starts taking shape.
Recently, a group of ASCEND clients rolled up their sleeves and got to work preparing delicious baked potatoes topped with cheese and bacon bits. Using air fryers, clients learned step-by-step cooking techniques while practicing important life and vocational skills in a real kitchen environment.
More Than Just Cooking
Cooking classes are about much more than preparing food. Every lesson helps clients develop practical daily living skills that can be used at home, in the community, and even in future employment settings.
During the activity, clients practiced:
Following multi-step directions
Kitchen safety and sanitation
Measuring and preparing ingredients
Using appliances safely
Time management
Teamwork and communication
Cleaning and organizing workspaces
These are valuable skills that transfer directly into food service, hospitality, and other workplace environments.
Learning Through Hands-On Experience
One of the most exciting parts of the ASCEND Culinary Academy is the hands-on approach. Clients are actively involved in every stage of the cooking process rather than simply watching demonstrations. From washing potatoes to seasoning, air frying, adding toppings, and serving the final product, each participant had an opportunity to contribute.
Using the air fryer also introduced clients to modern kitchen equipment that is commonly used in homes and professional kitchens today. Clients learned how to safely operate the appliance while understanding cooking times, temperature settings, and food preparation techniques.
The smiles and excitement throughout the lesson showed how engaging and rewarding cooking activities can be.
Building Independence One Recipe at a Time
Cooking is one of the most important independent living skills a person can develop. Being able to prepare meals promotes confidence, self-sufficiency, and healthier daily routines.
For many adults with disabilities, opportunities to practice these skills in a supportive environment can make a major difference. At ASCEND, staff work closely with clients to provide guidance, encouragement, and individualized support so every participant can succeed at their own pace.
Even a simple recipe like baked potatoes becomes an opportunity to build confidence and celebrate achievement.
Preparing for Future Employment Opportunities
The culinary field offers many different employment pathways, including positions in restaurants, cafeterias, catering, food preparation, and hospitality services. Through the ASCEND Culinary Academy, clients are beginning to explore foundational job skills that could support future vocational goals.
Activities like these help clients become familiar with:
Workplace expectations
Task completion
Following recipes and instructions
Food handling practices
Working cooperatively with others
Responsibility and consistency
By creating real-world learning opportunities, ASCEND continues to support clients in developing skills that can lead to greater independence and expanded employment possibilities.
The Future of the ASCEND Culinary Academy
This is only the beginning. As the ASCEND Culinary Academy continues to grow in our new annex, clients will have opportunities to learn new recipes, explore different cooking techniques, and participate in a variety of culinary activities.
From simple meals to more advanced food preparation, the goal is to create a welcoming environment where clients can learn, build confidence, and discover new talents.
We are incredibly proud of everyone who participated in this cooking class and look forward to many more delicious learning experiences ahead at the ASCEND Day Program.
